The Expert's Stalemate: The Weight of Self-Image

The more you rise in responsibility, the heavier the image of the “all-knowing expert” becomes. This expectation — one you often create yourself — creates a constant background noise that parasites your decision-making.

When you must decide, do you look at the real situation or the impact of your decision on your reputation? As soon as your expert image enters the equation, your vision blurs. You play a role instead of answering the challenge.

“Intelligence is the capacity to perceive reality without the filter of the desire for security.”

The expert’s stalemate is that moment when analysis paralyzes you. By trying to control everything to never fail, you lose contact with intuition. The fear of losing face acts as a filter that hides reality.

Recovering clarity requires a radical act: seeing this expert image for what it is — an unnecessary burden. When you stop defending your status, you regain total freedom. You no longer decide to “be” someone; you decide to resolve what is there.

My interventions aim precisely to lift this weight. By deactivating the defense mechanism of your self-image, your expertise finally becomes fluid.

Field Observation: The Expert Facing Doubt

During a leadership retreat, a CTO refused to admit that a major technological transition escaped him. His image as an expert was under threat. This defense blocked the entire team.

The work wasn’t about teaching him technology, but about looking together at his fear of “no longer knowing.” By accepting to no longer be the infallible expert, he released immense creativity. Collective intelligence restarted as soon as the individual image ceased to be defended.
